When The Severn Group opened its doors nearly 24 years ago, the company was a much smaller commercial construction and service business serving the D.C. Metro area. Today, the union contractor has grown into a major operation with a significantly larger team, expanded reach, and continued momentum.
The relationship between Preferred Insurance and The Severn Group began long before The Severn Group officially launched. In the mid-1990s, Preferred developed a business partnership with the CEO’s former construction company, which became one of Preferred’s initial clients. That executive-level relationship between the two company leaders helped establish the trust, familiarity, and understanding that later supported The Severn Group’s launch in 2002.
That early connection has continued throughout The Severn Group’s growth. “We’ve been with Preferred since day one,” said The Severn Group’s chief financial officer. As the company has evolved from a local business into a multi-state contractor, Preferred has remained part of the team.
Supporting Growth Beyond the D.C. Metro Area
Today, The Severn Group continues to expand beyond the D.C. Metro area into additional states, with new opportunities in the Southeast and beyond. As the business has grown, its insurance needs have grown with it.
For the company’s chief financial officer, one of the most valuable parts of working with Preferred has been the consistency of the relationship and the ability to plan ahead. The Severn Group meets with Preferred several times a year, including before the start of its fiscal year and again mid-year for updates and planning.
Responsive, Knowledgeable Service
The company also pointed to its account manager as a major asset. “She’s been really good,” he said. “She’s very responsive and very knowledgeable. Her skill set has definitely helped our performance.” That kind of steady support matters for a company operating at The Severn Group’s scale.
Capacity for a Growing Company
As The Severn Group has grown from a small business into a much larger company, Preferred has continued to support its changing insurance needs. “Preferred handles our capacity very well with our growth,” the chief financial officer said.
For The Severn Group, the relationship is about more than policies and pricing. “I think the team at Preferred are just great people,” he said. “It’s more than just business. We’re a team, and we get it all done together.”
